Revealing Our Past

We Reveal our Past and understand the geology that underpins our Forest. Rediscover our history and find threads of our past in the remains of historic buildings, buried heritage or in the memories of local people who plied traditional craft skills.

This film celebrates our Buried & Built Heritage project work:

Revealing our Past

Through seven projects we have been able to help more people appreciate the distinctive parts of our Forest history and understand our ‘claims to fame.’ We provided the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to help explain what made the Forest special and ensure that it remains special in the future.

How people were involved:

  • Looking for and recording built and buried heritage hidden in the Forest
  • Helping to conserve historic buildings and sites
  • Hearing about the geology, history and memories of local people in the Forest through walks, talks and oral history recordings, also using Forest dialect
  • Learning traditional craft skills such as tanning, spinning, dyeing and weaving, woodworking and blacksmithing
“These projects explore our past, to rediscover our history and heritage. We would like to reveal our past, to tell the story of the Forest and capture the knowledge and memories of our older generation before we lose that special link with our past.”
