Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days celebrates the diverse depth and range of the Forest of Dean’s history. The second weekend in September is marked by the opening of doors ensuring free access to welcome   local people and tourists to engage with local stories and sites. It is a time when you can get ‘behind the scenes’ to build a greater appreciation of the importance of our heritage in the Forest of Dean.

How to Get Involved:

Opportunities:

  • Volunteer as a guide at one of the sites
  • Research a new route and become a walk leader
  • Volunteer with the co-ordination, liaison and planning of the weekend

If you would like to get involved in this project, please contact

Forest Voluntary Action Forum tel:  01594 822073  email: forestersforest@fvaf.org.uk

Before November 2016 this project will:

  • Explore links with other Foresters’ Forest projects and develop the range of activities on offer
  • Develop training and skills potential by working with conservation groups
  • Explore longer term sustainability eg evaluating the feasibility of developing heritage craft markets or seasonal open days

Between 2017 - 2022 the project will:

  • Attract a range of engaging activities and events to be involved in the long weekend
  • Inform and develop volunteers so that they are able to facilitate an informative and enjoyable visitor experience
  • Collate information to produce entries onto the Heritage Open Days directory and a local leaflet
  • Exploit marketing and publicity opportunities
